Don't you just love it when an expert pianist plays the most delightful, simple piece as their final encore? It may remind you of a piece that you played when you first started to learn to play the piano. Played exquisitely by the right hands, of course, even the most simplistic of tunes can often be turned into a musical memory that lasts a lifetime.
The deceptively straightforward Valsa (Waltz from the Pastoral-Operetta Estrela d"Alva) by Brazilian lady composer Chiquinha (Francisca) Gonzaga (1847-1935) is just one of those pieces. Even the most experienced pianists will probably enjoy the challenge of the precise fingerwork required to make the playing sound perfect (and easy)! That doesn't mean that less proficient players should shy away from it - not at all, as it is easy to play, just a challenge to play it perfectly simply, with an accurate balance between the hands and a lyrical tune singing on the top line. Try it!
A recent recording of the piece by pianist Karin Fernandes has inspired this newly re-engraved edition by Fullscore Publishing.
Gonzaga composed hundreds of pieces for piano and Fernandes has selected some of the most beautiful waltzes on her 2023 recording Perfume. You can be inspired by her recording here:
